In addition to serving as advocates for their clients, the attorneys are available to act as independent mediators or arbitrators.  The mediator's role is to facilitate a negotiated settlement of a dispute.  By contrast, an arbitrator hears evidence and makes a decision in the case.  Both proceedings are often less costly and time consuming than traditional litigation.
