Firm History

On June 1, 1967, Cavan Hardy, Norwood Erich and John Quincy Brown, Jr., formed Hardy, Erich & Brown, a Professional Corporation.  Each had extensive experience with jury trials in the defense of personal injury claims, including professional liability, products liability, construction defects, and complex coverage issues.  William A. Wilson joined the firm as our first associate after having served as Federal District Court Judge Thomas MacBride's clerk, and as an associate with a predecessor law firm.

Hardy, Erich & Brown rose quickly in the 1960's and 1970's.  As the firm rode the wave of "boutique practices," its client list soon included major national companies, e.g.: Travelers Insurance Company, Liberty Mutual, AAA, Firemen's Fund, Geico, Mercury, American Mutual, Norcal, The Doctors Company, TDIC, Industrial Indemnity, Central Mutual, INA, CNA, California Casualty, General Motors, GMAC, Proctor & Gamble, GD Searle, Wyeth, Inc.

As our growth required increased space, the firm built an office building across the street from the new Sacramento County Courthouse.  More growth led to a merger (Weintraub, Genshlea, Hardy, Erich & Brown), a move to a larger building, branch offices in Northern California, appearances in Northern California counties, including the Bay Area, and sister states.  Now in the 1980s, we had nearly 100 attorneys and covered nearly all practice areas including tax, bonds, real estate, estate planning, business law, complex civil litigation, and complex employment law, alongside our thriving personal injury defense practice.

Over time, such diversity and its attendant management complexities produced fragmentation.  Our civil litigation group withdrew from the merger and became Hardy, Erich, Brown & Wilson.  In the 1990s, we returned to downtown Sacramento near the courthouses, close to the Capitol, financial district, and business centers.

We now number about 6 attorneys at 1000 G Street.  Our focus continues to be in litigation defense, with an emphasis on personal injury, professional liability (malpractice) defense, complex litigation, and employment law.

This brief history is offered to set the tone for the curious and the investigator to make further inquiry, which we invite.
